It is a general history in 12 volumes, from creation and the beginning of time until its era, where it ended at the end of the year 628 AH, that is, it deals with the history of the ancient world until the emergence of Islam, and the history of the Islamic world from the emergence of Islam until its era, and committed in his book the methodology of the year in Recording events, as it records the events of each year separately, and established a balance between news of the East and the Maghreb and what is between them over seven centuries and a quarter of a century, which gave his book the character of a general history more than any general history for others, and at the same time he did not neglect local incidents in each region, And news of weather and earth phenomena such as high costs and cheapness, drought, epidemics and earthquakes.

Ibn al-Atheer was not only a news reporter or a record of events in his book, but he was an excellent analyst and a visionary critic; Where he was keen to explain some historical phenomena and criticize the owners of his sources, and discussed a lot of their news, and he found in him political, war, moral and practical criticism that comes in the folds of the book, which made his historical personality completely clear in writing at all times.

The importance of The book indicated that he completed what the history of al-Tabari stopped with in the year 302 AH, which is the year in which his book ended. After al-Tabari, no book appeared covering the news of an era extending for more than three centuries, and the book included news of the Crusades a continuous group since their entry in the year 491 AH until In year 628 AH, it also included news of the Tatar encroachment on the Islamic East, since its inception in the year 616 AH. Ibn al-Atheer wrote his history in a manner in which he did not elaborate prose, moving away from verbal adornments and strange words, and taking care of reporting the news material in clear and concise terms. It is a book in which al-Dhahabi compiled all the incidents that occurred during that period
