This application offers offline access to eighty treaties and other documents regarding international humanitarian legislation (IHL) – most notably, the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, the ICRC’s original and up to date Commentaries on the Conventions and Additional Protocols, and the foundations of customary IHL identified by the ICRC’s 2005 Study on customary IHL. The software aims to support the promotion and implementation of IHL worldwide, by offering quick access to IHL treaties and the customary IHL guidelines in six languages. The ICRC hopes this application might help improve the usage of IHL by professionals in their humanitarian dialogue and negotiation, inform the general regulation and coverage debate, assist the educating and promotion of IHL, and ultimately contribute to strengthening protection for everybody affected by armed conflict.

IHL Treaties

The section on IHL treaties is split by subject and States Parties. Each treaty has a home page with an introduction; specific articles could be accessed from this web page. The Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols are accompanied by the ICRC’s original and up to date Commentaries. The numerous articles of every treaty can be consulted by swiping from right to left and from left to right. Tapping on “About this text” provides users access to general details about a treaty. Tapping on “States Parties” – on the top left of the web page – lets customers see the record of States party to that treaty, together with the dates of signature and ratification/accession, and the dates of any texts of declaration/reservation. Tapping on the title of a State redirects customers to a listing of all of the treaties in force for that State. By tapping on “States Signatories” – on the highest proper of the page – customers can see the list of States Signatories for each treaty, together with the dates of signature; tapping on the identify of a particular State, they will also see all of the treaties ratifie
